Jean-Michel Basquiat's Untitled (Head) ( 1981) is one of his most representative and powerful works, reflecting his raw and expressive style, as well as the recurring themes of identity, internal struggle and power. In this work, Basquiat presents an abstract portrait of a human head, characterized by aggressive strokes, vibrant colors and a structure that departs from traditional representations of the human figure. The head is outlined with thick lines, and its interior appears to be full of energy and chaos, with details such as oversized eyes, pointed teeth and an open mouth, suggesting a sense of tension, anxiety or aggression.
This work bears a relationship to Basquiat's childhood, particularly to the anatomy book his mother gave him as a child. This gift marked a milestone in his training and became a key source of inspiration for his visual style and interest in the human figure. The focus on anatomy and the structure of the body is evident in many of his works, where the human figure is broken down and reconstructed in an abstract and symbolic way. In Untitled (Head), the distorted head figure reflects not only a study of anatomy at its most visceral, but also an introspection on identity and human suffering.
In addition, Untitled (Head) can also be interpreted as a meditation on Basquiat's internal struggle, especially in relation to his African American identity and the difficulties he faced in the art world. The exaggerated features and distortion of the human figure suggest a reflection on how self-perception and external perception can be profoundly altered by social, racial and personal factors. Through this work, Basquiat shows the complexity of the human psyche, with an image as shocking as it is complex, inviting reflection on violence, vulnerability and identity, fundamental themes in his work.
